I reflect upon 10 years as an expat and we embark on a trip to the South Island's West Coast and Otago lakes. There's heaps on in Wellington too but the bestest greatest and most wonderful thing of all is that it's really and truly summer, finally, thank god, summer.

A big month where we not only become New Zealand residents but also buy our first house. It must be six months since we got here because the car already needs its twice-yearly check-up. ANZAC Day reminds us why we moved here and not to Australia, while the first storms of winter could almost make us question that decision.

Where we find jobs but don't start them yet, and learn about the health care system while waiting for the miserable weather to turn into summer. When it finally arrives, we go bush, taking on mountains and rivers. After that, we have proven worthy of becoming Kiwis and are invited to apply for residency.

After a bumpy journey and a brief stop in Melbourne, we finally reach New Zealand. We're humbled by the friendliness, learn how to drive on the wrong side of the road and how to say "yis", and begin to set up our new life.
